Syrgis Performance Initiators Opens New Laboratory

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe On Hand for Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony

HELENA, Ark. – (Sept. 2, 2010) – Syrgis Performance Initiators, Inc., a subsidiary of Syrgis, an international diversified group of fine and specialty chemical manufacturers, opened the doors to a new stand-alone laboratory to support its global organic peroxides business.

Located on the campus of Syrgis Performance Initiators’ world-class manufacturing complex in Helena, Ark., the new lab will provide support for the company’s global manufacturing enterprise as well as its global customers. The 2,500-square-foot lab facility, including a separate remote-controlled reactor facility, is configured to support Syrgis’ current research needs and to provide for future growth. The remote-controlled reactor facility, specifically, will allow for the research and development of new organic peroxides as well as the ongoing development of innovative manufacturing processes.

According to Andy Harris, Syrgis CEO, this capital investment reflects Syrgis’ commitment to the reinforced fiberglass composite markets, to the State of Arkansas, and to quality technical manufacturing capabilities in the United States.

“We are committed to making the investments to implement our strategy and accelerate our innovation program” said Harris. “The new laboratory and reactor facility will provide Syrgis and our customers with additional tools to further differentiate ourselves in the organic peroxides marketplace. Technology leadership and application expertise are key strengths of each Syrgis company. Dr. Kevin Guigley, Technology Manager Organic Peroxides, will lead this facility as a key component of our strategy to continuously improve our technology position across the corporation.”

In addition to the ribbon cutting for the lab, a celebration was held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the company opening its doors in the State. Harris, Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe and several local political leaders joined in the event. Governor Beebe said that he was “proud to have Syrgis manufacturing in Arkansas” and commended Syrgis for its commitment to continued operations in the state.

Syrgis Performance Initiators produces methyl ethyl ketone peroxides (MEKP) at the facility in Helena as well as Köpmanholmen, Sweden. The company also manufactures benzoyl peroxide (BPO) at its facility in Arkansas. These organic peroxides are used to initiate the curing reactions of various composite polymer systems and enable solutions to be provided for varied end-use applications ranging from wind turbine blades, to shower stall enclosures, to synthetic marble, to automotive body putty, to road marking paint, to fiberglass boats, and to infrastructure pipe.
